Chapter 15

Each heartbeat reverberated in Lindsay’s skull, and she hoped her eye wasn’t physically twitching as much as she suspected it was. Other than the satisfaction from proving Steve wrong when that client did actually materialize, her day had not gotten better. Now, a last-minute walk-in consisting of an overbearing mother of the bride was dithering over very specific shades of pink floss for monogramming bridesmaids’ gifts. Lindsay felt like pinning up all the swatches on the wall and making the woman play “Pin the Tail on the Pantone Color” just to get her to make a decision.

“I’m looking at swatches right now, and either Ballet Slipper or Pink Marshmallow would be perfect.” The woman grinned at Lindsay, and Lindsay gave her a thumbs-up even though she couldn’t give a rat’s ass herself.

The woman rolled her eyes and made talky-talk motions with her hand as she listened to the disembodied voice. “Muffin, I know Rose Quartz is so in, but I think it might be too in. Okay, sweetheart. I will talk to you soon. Tomorrow is cake day!” She made a kissy noise and ended the call. “Sometimes you have to nudge them and let them think it was their idea, right?”

Lindsay gave the woman a tight-lipped smile that she hoped didn’t look too much like a grimace because if she said anything right then, she’d tell this vapid woman exactly what she thought about nudging, even little ones, and, well, Lindsay couldn’t afford to burn this bridge so early in the game.

“So what do I have to do?” The woman was obviously delighted with the choice, and Lindsay couldn’t begrudge the woman her pleasure, so she gave her a genuine smile and opened up a client folder.

Half an hour later, paperwork all filled out, the woman left with a spring in her step and a prissy sample bag, and Lindsay closed and locked the door behind her.

“What a freaking day,” she said aloud.

As she gathered up her tote bag and purse, she pondered her creepy coworker. Steve obviously had a chip on his shoulder, though she wasn’t exactly sure why, and he definitely wasn’t winning her over by being pushy and overly insistent. However, she reckoned that was just part and parcel of his obvious insecurity. But the semi-menacing
